Lebensborn (German: fountain of life) was a secret organization set up by SS chief Heinrich Himmler. It began operating in late 1935, with the purpose of enabling German women with Nordic "Aryan" features to give birth out of wedlock as well, when the child's father was an SS officer. The organization had children's homes and also institutions to care for pregnant teens and young women. The organization also dealt with kidnapping children of "Aryan" appearance throughout the German - occupied countries, predominantly in the East, bringing them to the program's facilities for "Germanization."
