Documents and certificates of the Zeisler family from Zagreb, Croatia.
Dan Zur was born in Zagreb in 1938 as Dan Danken Zeisler, the son of Ernest and Greta. Greta was the daughter of Leopold and Gisela Hafner, and Ernest was the son of Leopold and Charlotte Zeisler. In August 1941, after the German invasion of Zagreb, Ernest, Greta and Dan fled to the Italian – occupied region of Dalmatia. The Zeisler family found shelter in the following localities: Bakarac, Susak, Crikvenica and Selce. Dan's sister Dunja – Ruth was born in Selce in December 1941. In October 1942 the family was arrested and was interned in the Kraljevica camp, from which they were transferred to the island of Rab in June 1943. In September 1943, following Italy's surrender, Germany occupied the Italian – ruled territories. With the help of Yugoslav partisans, the family was smuggled by boat from Rab to Senj, and from there to Otocac, where they joined Yugoslav partisans. From September 1943 until July 1944 the family lived in the forests, constantly fleeing the Germans. In July 1944, following an agreement between the partisans, the Allies and the JDC organization to evacuate the children of the partisans to southern Italy, Dan and his sister were airlifted from Cremusnica, where an airfield was set up, to Bari. In Bari the children were raised separately by Italian foster families until May 1945. They were then returned to Yugoslavia to reunite with their parents, and lived in Zagreb for three more years. In December 1948 the family moved to Israel, and settled in Nahariya in January 1949.
