The ruins of a building on Nowy Swiat (New World) Street in Warsaw. A German army car is parked beside the building, and Polish civilians are walking on the street. The photo was sent as a picture postcard by a German soldier to his family on March 24, 1940:
"This is a building on Nowy Swiat Street, a main street, on which a large bomb destroyed the entire facade of a building [block]. There's a Polish custom of hanging a picture of the Holy Virgin in every building, even a shop or office, and above it an oil lamp or small electric light. This always gives me a strange feeling, to see light shining in the evenings on a picture in a ruined building. Only after more than four weeks did the place go dark.
Heartfelt greetings, Father" Close
