Witold Pilecki, a Polish inmate of Auschwitz. Piletzki was among the founders of the Polish underground active in the camp, where he was known as Tomasz Serafinski. He escaped in April 1943, and afterwards wrote a report of what he had witnessed. After the war he was sentenced to death by the Communist government and executed.
