Original listing: Holdings Registry file No. 03147
The last letter of Szmul Potasznik, called “Sam,” a member of the anti - Nazi underground in Belgium, that he wrote after being apprehended by the Germans. On the evening before his execution, Potasznik takes leave of his wife Lalka (Golda - Ola - Leocadia - Lola), nee Zingier, and their children: son, Daniel, and and the daughter he’d never met, Arielle - Jeaninne, born in June 1943. Brussels (Bruxelles), Sept. 8, 1943.
He evidently wrote the letter in French at the request of his jailors (so that they could read it). Attached to the letter: a family photo he received from his wife, with several words of dedication written on the back.
The original letter and the photograph are in the possession of the daughter, Arielle Potasznik, in Brussels, Belgium.
The copies held in this file were donated in November 1951 by his cousin, Cwi Potasznik, who had arrived in Mandate Palestine in the 1930s.
For further information, see Holdings Registry files Nos. 14397 and 27244 in the GFH Archives.
His wife, Golda Potasznik, born in Wlodzimierz, Poland in 1911, was killed in 1955 when an El Al plane in which she was traveling was shot down over Bulgaria.
