The third graduating class of a nursing school in Warsaw, photographed with members of the administrative staff. The nursing school was part of the Berson - Bauman [Children's] Hospital in Warsaw. Photographed in December 1934. Some of these nurses worked afterwards with Janusz Korczak.
In the photo:
Dr. Jadwiga Hufnagel - Majewska (seated, on the right), Assistant Director of the (Neonatal) Pediatrics Department;
Henryk Kruszczor (seated, third from the right), Administrative Director of the hospital and nursing school;
Dr. Anna Braude - Heller (seated, fourth from the right), Chief of Medical Staff;
Dr. Zeidman (seated, third from the left), Director of the Surgery Department;
the pediatricians Dr. Lichtenbaum (seated, second from the left) and Dr. Goclawek (top row, second from the left),
the pediatrician (or internist?) Dr. Kirschenbaum (middle row, second from the left),
Dr. Festenstad (middle row, fifth from the left), Director of the (Newborns) Pediatrics department;
Dr. Owczarek (middle row, fifth from the right), a senior ENT physician;
and a pediatrician, Dr. Pilz.
Notes regarding the fate of some of these physicians during the wartime period:
1) Dr. Hufnagel, with her "Aryan" appearance, succeeded in getting 32 members of her family into hiding on the "Aryan" side. On the day before the liberation of Warsaw by the Soviet Red Army, they were informed on, caught in their hiding place and shot on the spot. Dr. Hufnagel, who found the bodies, lost her sanity -- and only after many years of treatment returned to her profession, working in the Polish health care system.
2) Dr. Braude - Heller obtained "life permits" from the German authorities for half of the hospital's employees, and she had to distribute these permits according to her judgment. She refused to make this "selection" -- and remained in the ghetto during the uprising, despite a hiding place having been prepared for her on the "Aryan" side.
3) Drs. Pilz and Owczarek were murdered in the Katyn forest. Close
